  • The City announced on December 8 that Seattle’s greenhouse gas emissions in 2008 were 7 percent below 1990 levels, meeting the targets of the Kyoto Protocol.
  • Seattle was the first city in the country to adopt LEED as a municipal design standard, and silver is the required level. The LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, rating system, registers sustainable, built projects under four levels: certified, silver, gold and platinum.
  • Adopted in February 2000, Seattle’s Sustainable Building Policy was an integral part of the City’s move toward sustainability.
  • Green building is a key component of environmental planning for Seattle’s Center City area. By 2024, it is projected that this area will produce 50,000 new jobs and more than 22,000 new housing units, according to the City of Seattle Department of Planning and Development.

The Seattle Green Festival has formed a partnership with the city’s first eco-friendly hotel seeking LEED (Lead in Energy & Environmental Design) certification, Hyatt at Olive 8. This will also be the first LEED hotel opened by Hyatt Hotels and Resorts.
