A font to save you green. And we don’t mean just ink.
SPRANQ creative communications (Utrecht, The Netherlands) has come up with a revolutionary idea – the Ecofont. It has been called “the Dutch font with holes.” For years makers of surgical instruments have been using the principle of de-bulking heavy instruments to manufacture light-weight instruments which are easier to handle. The connection to the Ecofont is this: the font consists of holes punched in the letters so that your printer will consume that much less ink, up to 20% less ink. It avoids avoidable waste and prevents preventable spending.
Visualize for a moment putting away a dollar a day. Now imagine you did it all of your life. And everyone else you know, their friends, and the acquaintances of those friends did so too. And then one day you donated the whole lump sum to charity. Unlikely but huge in scope. So is the Ecofont with the difference that the Ecofont is real and not hypothetical. The universal potential gives it infinite dimension and power to do good. I see green businesses adopting the free Ecofont as the most natural choice.
Living in times where the mantra is “Reduce, Re-use, Recycle” (I learned this from my six year old), it is noteworthy that Ecofont is based on one of these core green principles. The good old maxim of “waste not, want not” holds true. The simplicity of the idea behind the Ecofont makes it a sustainable change and a viable choice. Punching out small circles keeps the letter readable while cutting printing costs by using up to 20% less ink.
Ecofont is based on Vera Sans, an Open Source letter, and is available for Windows, Mac OSX, and Linux. The ecofriendly font works best with Open Office, AppleWorks, and MS Office 2007. The best results are obtained when printing with a laser printer.
The best ideas are the simplest ones. Congratulations to SPRANQ creative communications on a green business solution that costs nothing to implement, saves us money, and does not compromise on quality. Long live change.
